What fills up your cup?
I’m motivated to do my best in work and life and a big part of that is making sure those that cross my path daily feel loved, seen and heard. I’m a very big fan of the community and the love and support that brings.
How did you end up at Allen Marine?
I was a Nanny for 8 years previously and doing full time in-home childcare/schooling during Covid about killed me. I did a lot of reflecting and was reading a book at the time that talked about how doing things outside your comfort zone is so good for your mental health and overall wellbeing. A friend of mine suggested trying seasonal work to get experience in different fields, trying something new and most importantly, having a contracted end date! Alaska felt like it would push my comfort zone right out the window!
Living the maritime lifestyle has its challenges, what advice would you give someone choosing this career path?
Maritime and seasonal work have so many pros and very few cons in my opinion. The advice I would give is, keep your family and friends in your life, even from afar. In a world with FaceTime and Zoom, you can stay connected to loved ones and when your “home” again that time is all the sweeter. (also, you become the center of attention when you come home because everyone missed you 😊)
What do you like about working for Allen Marine?
I feel so grateful that of all the seasonal jobs I could have chosen, that I was lucky enough to find Allen Marine. Our company is native, and family owned and comes with so much heart. I enjoyed working here last year but loved it way more the second time around. Working and living alongside people has its good and bad but I believe the seasonal staff hired in conjunction with the full-time staff, creates instant friends and a sense of community, every season. Each day has its routines but that being said you’ll never get the same day twice. The access to wildlife we get to see when we go out on our boats on any given day is absolutely amazing. It’s a privilege to be able to share our backyard with people from all over the world! I am so proud that we build our own boats right here in Sitka, (I may not have built a single thing, but the pride that it fills me with, you would think I built every one)! Speaking of those that built our boats, I also love all the different departments and characters that help this company succeed- the friends from last year have become like family this year. I am genuinely so thankful for this company and the time, energy and love they have poured into me. I recognize the privilege it is to work for a company that I am proud of, in a place as beautiful as southeast Alaska.
