Yakutat/Hubbard Glacier Job Openings
Join the Allen Marine Tours team in our newest port! While residing in *Yakutat, Alaska crew members will be providing daily tours of the Hubbard Glacier.
Guests board the Allen Marine Tours expedition vessel directly from their cruise ship. Once all guests are onboard the vessel sets off to explore Disenchantment Bay and get an up-close view of the Hubbard Glacier.
Employee housing is available. Crew members reside in the same household. A grocery stipend is provided to crew members. It is important to note that there is limited cell phone and internet service available in this remote port.
Employment begins and ends in Juneau, Alaska for onboarding and training. Allen Marine then provides travel either by boat or plane, at the company’s discretion, from Juneau to Yakutat. Travel is also provided from Yakutat to Juneau at the conclusion of employee’s contracted season.
*Yakutat, Alaska is a small community located in Southeast Alaska. The population of Yakutat was approximately 650 residents in 2019.
For All Positions:
- Preference is given to applicants who are fully available to work from late April through the end of September.
- Must be drug-free. Allen Marine participates in a Coast Guard required pre-employment & random drug screening program for all employees.
- Must be at least 18 years old at date of hire, and able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work varied hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Due to the evolving workplace and governmental requirements for the Covid-19 pandemic, the duties and responsibilities of each position are subject to change.
- Vaccination for Covid 19 may be a requirement for some positions.

Hubbard Glacier Captain / Manager
Under the supervision of the Operations Manager and Port Captain of the Juneau, AK port. The position requires the ability to work independently. Duties will be performed under general guidelines which will require interpretation and sound judgment. Duties and Responsibilities listed here are subject to addition or removal depending on requirements of the company. The Personnel assigned here shall receive all available and pertinent information before these changes take effect. These duties and responsibilities are in addition to the requirements of the Captain Position.
Leadership and Management Responsibilities:
- Ensure that vessel crew are acting within the guidelines of the Company Mission
- Act as an example and give guidance for the execution of the Company Mission and True Alaskan Hospitality
- Ensure adequate crew rotation and scheduling throughout the season and communicate with Juneau Port Captain of any crew issues or additional requirements
- Liaison between vessel crews and management regarding personnel issues
- Acting liaison with cruise ship bridge staff
- Relay vessel mechanical issues to Port Engineer and Port Captain in Juneau
- Schedule and perform routine maintenance on vessel
- Remain in close communication with sales manager via satellite phones
- Report ramp up and ramp down times
- Report trip reports at the conclusion of each tour
- Report any delays due to vessel mechanical issues, ice conditions, weather, etc.
- Oversee all aspects of vessel readiness for tours:
- Retail on display as intended
- Vessel is fully stocked with all food and beverage inventory.
- TAPS Certification Required
Qualifications/Experience
- Experience on passenger vessels and/or experience operating vessels in Southeast Alaska required. Required minimum 100-ton license
- Must have or obtain FCC Radio Operator’s Permit
- Mechanical aptitude, engine room experience preferred. Diesel mechanics or electrical/electronics background helpful.
- Must have ability to build effective team and skills required to resolve crew conflicts to provide quality experience for customers.
- Must have ability to speak on P.A. system, and to provide commentary.
- Must be able to lift and move objects of up to 50 lbs. as required.
- Must be drug free (pre-employment screening and enrollment in random drug testing program is Coast Guard required).
- Must be able to work varied shift hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Must be clean, well groomed, courteous, honest, and most important, reliable.
- Uniform shirts & jacket provided.
Pay
DOE. Limited Benefits. This is a seasonal, full-time position from mid-April to October. Preference will be given to candidates who are available to work the entire season without interruption. An end of season bonus will be paid to employees who finish their contract in good standing.
Yakutat Crew Member
Requires basic seamanship skills. Mechanical aptitude and some experience with diesel engines preferred. Assist Captain to monitor vessel systems and troubleshoot problems. Interact with passengers, perform customer service and galley service duties. Always provide for passenger safety while underway and maintain impeccably clean vessel. Must be able to work as a team member and be comfortable interacting with guests.
Duties/Responsibilities- Assist with passenger boarding, safety orientation/demonstration, and crowd control.
- Be familiar with all safety equipment and operation on board the vessel.
- Under supervision of the Vessel Engineer, complete routine engine room checks underway, making minor mechanical repairs and adjustments as necessary.
- Assist Captain in wheelhouse with navigating and/or wildlife sighting as directed.
- Under supervision of Vessel Engineer and Captain, maintain vessel appearance, with regards to cleanliness and safety, in engine and jet rooms, in voids and on decks.
- Help operate galley, bar and commissary, including preparation & distribution of meals, sales, stocking, inventory order lists and related paperwork.
- Under direction of Captain, complete all routine vessel maintenance on a daily basis. This will include, but not be limited to: cleaning, sanitation pumping, restocking, and refueling.
- Assist Captain to perform required safety checks of all essential equipment on a weekly basis.
- Maintain current and accurate logs.
- Identify problems, inform Captain and Vessel Engineer, and assist in performing needed repairs.
- Perform other duties under supervision of Captain.
- Prefer experience on passenger carrying vessels.
- Mechanical aptitude, engine room experience preferred. Diesel mechanics or electrical/electronics background helpful.
- Must be able to work as a team with other crew to provide quality experience for customers, including answering questions and providing commentary.
- Must be able to lift and move objects of up to 50 lbs. as required.
- Must be drug free (pre-employment screening and enrollment in random drug testing program is Coast Guard required).
- Must be able to work varied shift hours, including weekends and holidays. Days off will be scheduled but must be willing to be flexible in meeting tour demand.
- Must be clean, well groomed, courteous, honest, and most important, reliable.
- Uniform jackets and hats are provided.
- TAP and Alaska Food Worker Certifications required.
Naturalist
Requires public speaking ability and experience using PA systems. Develop tour narrative and conduct natural history presentations for groups of up to 150 passengers. Assist passengers boarding & disembarking; provide safety and emergency orientation; and work as a team member to distribute snacks and always maintain impeccably clean vessel. Biology and natural history background helpful.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Develop tour narrative plan with duty captain for each voyage, factoring time constraints, weather, recent sightings, tide, season, etc.
- Direct passengers boarding and disembarking, and during an emergency. Conduct safety and emergency orientation.
- Work with Guest Services crew members to provide commentary and personal interaction/service with up to 150 passengers on tour.
- Assist Guest Services crew members in the galley as needed. Including, but not limited to, distribution of snacks and food items as well as beverages. Employees 21+ are required to obtain TAPS certification to serve alcohol.
- Vessel duties include line handing, assist with docking / undocking of the vessel and mooring with cruise ships as requested by vessel captain.
- Assist other crew in maintaining vessel appearance, cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.
- Perform other duties under supervision of Captain.
Qualifications/Experience
- Prior experience working on passenger carrying vessels preferred.
- Certifications required prior to first day of employment include CPR / FA certification, and Alaska Food Handlers card. Employees 21+ must obtain TAPS certification to serve alcohol.
- Public speaking experience very helpful. Must be able to effectively communicate with up to 150 passengers on a P.A. system.
- Biology and/or natural resource background helpful. Must be able to learn and retain pertinent background material provided on board, for presentation to passengers.
- Must be able to work as a team with other crew to present coordinated narration and a quality experience for customers.
- Must be able to lift and move objects of up to 50 lbs. as required.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be drug free (pre-employment screening and enrollment in random drug testing program is Coast Guard required).
- Must be able to work varied shift hours, including weekends and holidays. Days off will be scheduled but must be willing to be flexible in meeting tour demand.
- Must be clean, well groomed, courteous, honest, and most important, reliable.
- Uniform jackets and hats are provided.
