Ketchikan Job Openings

In Ketchikan, we conduct three tour programs: the award-winning Misty Fjords & Wilderness Explorer cruise (4.5-hour duration), Wildlife Safari and Beach Bonfire (3.5-hour duration), and NEW in 2018 - Seafood Tasting, Wildlife Cruise, and Historic Cannery (3.5-hour duration). Our tours are designed to explore, observe and learn about the natural history and wildlife of Southeast Alaska, as well as, provide hands on training and experience of the wilderness.

We presently operate five vessels based in Ketchikan. They are high-speed, waterjet-powered vessels (built in our own Sitka shipyard) that have been specially designed to enhance our guest's comfort and tour experience.  Depending on size and passenger capacity, each vessel operates with a 3-6 person crew. Many of our crew and support staff return to work with us season after season. Some work in similar "outdoor adventure" jobs, in other parts of the world, during the winter months.

For All Positions:

  • Preference is given to applicants who are fully available to work from late April through the end of September.
  • Must be drug-free.  Allen Marine participates in a Coast Guard required pre-employment & random drug screening program for all employees.
  • Must be at least 18 years old at date of hire, and able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work varied hours, including weekends and holidays.

Positions that are available in Ketchikan include:
  • Captain

    Requires a USCG master's license (50 ton minimum) and an FCC marine radio operator's permit.  Prior experience in the marine tourism industry and particularly on passenger vessels is desirable.  Preference is given to applicants with knowledge of diesel mechanics, waterjet propulsion, and electrical systems.  Must be able to build team and maintain crew moral to provide a quality experience for our guests.

    Captain: Complete Job Description

    Duties/Responsibilities

    • Conduct tours as directed according to descriptions in sales literature and procedures in policy manual. Supervise all aspects of tour delivery and tour quality.
    • Manage and direct crew members in the execution of all their job responsibilities; build a productive and efficient team; maintain high morale over course of season.
    • Supervise and assist in daily maintenance: cleaning, sewage and fuel pumping, restocking. Coordinate and assist with routine maintenance; painting, changing oil, etc.
    • Communicate with Port Engineer to identify problems and expedite repairs; assist with repairs, as needed.
    • Supervise passenger boarding, safety orientation/demonstration, emergency response and crowd control.
    • Plan and execute emergency drills, equipment checks and safety meetings in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and AMT policy.
    • Maintain all navigational equipment in good working order; keep logs and ship/company documents, as directed. Provide daily operations report to office.

    Qualifications/Experience

    • Experience on passenger vessels and/or experience operating vessels in Southeast Alaska required. Required minimum 50-ton license.

  • Engineer/Deckhand

    Requires basic seamanship skills.  Mechanical aptitude and some experience with diesel engines preferred.  Assist Captain to monitor vessel systems and troubleshoot problems.  Interact with passengers and perform customer service duties.  Provide for passenger safety while underway and maintain impeccably clean vessel at all times.  Must be able to work as a team member and be comfortable interacting with guests.

    Engineer/Deckhand: Complete Job Description

    Duties/Responsibilities

    • Check all engine/jet fluids upon arriving on vessel each morning, bring all equipment online, log all entries and report any problems to Captain.
    • Assist with passenger boarding, safety orientation/demonstration, emergency response and crowd control.
    • Complete routine engine room checks underway, making minor mechanical repairs and adjustments as necessary, and assisting crew members to ensure that passengers receive optimum tour quality and premium customer service.
    • Assist Captain in wheelhouse with navigating and/or wildlife sighting as directed.
    • Maintain vessel appearance, with regards to cleanliness and safety, in engine and jet rooms, in voids and on decks. Assist other crew with cabin, galley and heads.
    • Under direction of Captain, complete all routine vessel maintenance on a daily basis. This will include, but not be limited to: cleaning, sanitation pumping, restocking and refueling.
    • Assist Captain to perform required safety checks of all essential equipment on a weekly basis. Maintain current and accurate logs.
    • Work with Port Engineer to complete all mandatory vessel maintenance on a monthly basis, including but not limited to oil/filter changes, zinc/belt replacement, etc.

  • Port Engineer

    Requires extensive mechanical experience with diesel engines, preferably in the maritime industry. Must be able to diagnose systems and make repairs on short notice to keep fleet of day tour vessels in service. Needs to be self-directed but able to work effectively with team of Captains/Deckhands. This is a shore-based position.

    • Prefer experience in tour-related industry, but experience in any maritime-related field acceptable.
    • Requires extensive mechanical experience with diesel engines and a working knowledge of related auxiliary systems on a vessel.

    Responsibilities

    • Be on site every morning one hour prior to tour departures to consult with Captains, to advise deckhands and to resolve any mechanical issues that present; be available at initial startups in case a system requires troubleshooting prior to tour.
    • Supervise Deckhands, monitor engine logs for each vessel; do required maintenance on prescribed schedule; be available to assist with all oil/fuel filter changes on vessels, including; greasing zircs, changing zincs. Maintain an accurate independent log on all work completed.
    • Conduct on-board training initially and at various intervals throughout the season for specialized, but predictable underway repairs. (ie. replacing impeller in raw water cooling system, etc)
    • Work closely with Sitka Port Engineer to diagnose and repair mechanical issues in a timely manner.
    • Order, receive and maintain complete inventory of spare parts for engines and auxiliary systems on each vessel (incl. belts, impellers, filters, gaskets etc.).
    • Supervise and maintain on-site septic pump-out system.
    • Maintain docks, ramp, shop and all other aspects of facility, including septic and fuel systems, in good repair with an effort to keep facility neat and well organized.
    • Work efficiently and cooperatively with mechanics/welders dispatched to Ketchikan from Sitka or from other dealerships in Alaska. Assign deckhand/engineers to assist.
    • Ride along on an occasional tour in an effort to monitor vessel systems while underway. Conduct extensive checks of engine and jet room spaces throughout course of trip.
    • Fill in, as needed, aboard vessels as deckhand/engineer and function as an effective member of the crew conducting engine room checks, maintaining passenger safety and performing customer service.

  • Assistant Port Engineer

    Under the direction of Port Engineer, this position is responsible for performing regular scheduled maintenance duties on all day tour vessels including assisting Captains with oil changes; for assisting Port Engineer with mechanical repairs; and for keeping all parts, filters, and equipment areas on dock stocked, organized and neat.

    Conduct walking tours through the historic George Inlet Salmon Cannery, located in a picturesque, wilderness setting. Present the fascinating culture and lore of a by-gone era and uniquely Alaskan way of life, leading groups of 16-48 guests at a time. Requires public speaking ability and an enthusiastic/theatrical presentation style. Must take pride in presenting history with accuracy and authenticity. Some light maintenance of cannery grounds required. This is a shore-based position.

    • Meet all tour buses and Allen Marine tour vessels, escort passengers through facility and conduct narrated tour of site.

  • Assistant Supply Coordinator

    Manage tour and retail supply inventory for fleet of vessels. Schedule and monitor vendor deliveries; receive and stock goods. Manage retail cash/check/credit card receipts for each vessel and balance at end of tour day. Track use of supplies, keep accurate records and prepare periodic reports. Must have previous experience with inventory control including ordering, tracking, and stocking and displaying of supplies and merchandise.     • Manage tour and retail inventory may include purchasing, receiving, stocking and distributing all vessel supplies. Products to include cleaning and paper supplies; food and beverage inventory; clothing, books and other retail items.

    Duties/Responsibilities

    • Meet and greet guests to establish a rapport by welcoming them, relaying important information, orienting them to the local area and providing guest services that will be beneficial to their experience.
    • Perform concierge duties to assist in passenger's pre/post cruise lodging, luggage and transportation, including: contacting airlines, vendors, hotels, taxi services, special needs, specific room requests, tour arrangements, birthdays, updates on special events.
    • Maintain and update daily manifest and coordinate with corporate office regarding passenger's pre/post cruise itineraries and preferences, hospitality programs, and ship needs reports
    • Assist to produce accurate and personal daily schedules or "adventure updates" and use resources such as brochures, staff, and other tools available to make educated suggestions for optional activities in all Alaskan Dream Cruises locations. Promote, sell and book optional tours to meet division annual sales goals
    • Respond tactfully and immediately to any/ all guest concerns and criticisms to resolve problems effectively.
    • Assist Ship's Crew in port to ensure cruise activities are supported as planned i.e. movies, brochures, books, retail products, newsletters.
    • Assist Operations Manager with ship provisioning, housekeeping and crew assignments.
    • Other duties as assigned within the Allen Marine Tour Program Managers.

    Qualifications/Experience

    • Must be self-motivated, creative, and able to multi-task in a hectic environment with competing priorities while adhering to broadly defined practices, procedures and processes.
    • Must have good command of the English language with the ability to speak publicly in front of small to medium sized groups, exhibiting strong oral communication skills along with excellent writing skills.
    • Must have a genuine interest in and ability to learn pertinent facts and information about the state of Alaska and share it with others in an enthusiastic and entertaining way.
    • Must have solid teamwork and Interpersonal skills and the ability to get along well with others and take direction with ease.
    • Must be flexible and remain calm even under most trying circumstances
    • Must have the physical ability to frequently lift and carry objects of moderate to heavy weight, such as luggage and/or other equipment.
    • Must be drug free (pass pre-employment and random tests as required by the USCG/DOT/FHWQ).
    • Must maintain neat and well groomed appearance in keeping with Allen Marine Tours/Alaskan Dream Cruises standards.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in the travel/tour industry
    • General knowledge of the local area.
    • First Aid/CPR certification.
    • Computer literacy in a variety of programs, including word, excel, publisher and power point.
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Valid Driver's License

    Pay

    DOE. Preference will be given to applicants who can commit to working through the October 1, 2012 in good standing and without interruption. A bonus will be paid accordingly.

  • True Alaska Host

    The True Alaska Host plays a vital role aboard Allen Marine tour vessels. This position functions as a tour director, who works closely with the Captain to ensure success, safety and unsurpassed guest services on every tour. This position works to coordinate the activities below decks to orchestrate a cohesive and successful tour experience. Reports to Captain (Vessel) and Staff Captain/Ops Manager (Office).

    Duties/Responsibilities

    • Liaison with Captain prior to each tour for pertinent information such as tides, weather, marine traffic, anticipated route etc. Assist Captain to maintain tour schedule.
    • Provide Pre-Tour Briefing to Crew to relay information from Captain along with Cruise ship itinerary, description and guest demographics.
    • Manage development of tour experience aboard the vessel. Use microphone to introduce each aspect from Safety speech to Retail presentation.
    • Orient guests to their location in the Inside Passage and particularly along the tour route. Use Route Map to make sure they are informed of their location and points of interest (lighthouses, historical sites, local knowledge and company history).
    • Present Naturalist to conduct the interpretive narrative, including marine biology, resident mammals, geology, glaciology etc. Provide support and relief so they can engage one-on-one with our guests at regular intervals.
    • Supervise Guest Service crew; provide support and assistance as needed.in the galley particularly during retail sales, post presentation
    • Communicate to the crew via the Captain to ensure timing of food and beverage service compliments the tour and the needs of our guests.
    • Assist crew to keep cabin, decks and heads clear of trash and clean throughout tour.
    • Monitor guest comfort with consideration for temperature of cabin and amplification of speakers. Make sure Guest Service crew interacts with children according to AMT protocols.
    • Guide crew in AMT mission to connect with each guest as they move about the vessel offering service and suggesting photo opportunities
    • Observe guest satisfaction and create plans to improve guest service.
    • Administrative duties include assisting the Captain in overseeing comment cards, trip reports, gift shop cash and sales reports, inventory, and other vessel record keeping needs.

    Qualifications/Experience

    • Friendly, professional attitude. Willing to work in a team with positivity, flexibility, and integrity.
    • Creative thinker. Strong organizational skills. Capable of handling multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Proficient with basic computer programs. Knowledge of the Microsoft Suite and Outlook is preferred.
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
    • Must have strong customer focus and a passion to consistently deliver and improve the brand's standing within the industry and marketplace.
    • Able to interact with others in a professional manner, be accountable for actions, maintain confidentiality, and support company values.
    • Must be able to work varied shift hours, including weekends and holidays. Days off will be scheduled but must be willing to be flexible in meeting tour demand.
    • Must pass pre-employment drug screening and comply with company random drug testing program.

    Pay
    DOE. Limited Benefits. This is a seasonal full time position from mid-April to October. Preference will be given to candidates who are available to work through the end of the season without interruption. An end of season bonus will be paid to employees who complete their contract in good standing.
