Ketchikan Job Openings
Ketchikan is Alaska’s “Salmon Capital” and the fourth largest city (population: 14,000) in the state. There is a public bus system that connects the main commerce centers but does not extend far outside the main city limits. It is possible to live comfortably in Ketchikan without a vehicle, but it is recommended that you at least bring a bike to get around town.
Vessel Crew:

Captain
Requires a USCG master's license (50 ton minimum) and an FCC marine radio operator's permit. Prior experience in the marine tourism industry and particularly on passenger vessels is desirable. Preference is given to applicants with knowledge of diesel mechanics, waterjet propulsion, and electrical systems. Must be able to build team and maintain crew moral to provide a quality experience for our guests.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Conduct tours as directed according to descriptions in sales literature and procedures in policy manual. Supervise all aspects of tour delivery and tour quality.
- Manage and direct crew members in the execution of all their job responsibilities; build a productive and efficient team; maintain high morale over course of season.
- Supervise and assist in daily maintenance: cleaning, sewage and fuel pumping, restocking. Coordinate and assist with routine maintenance; painting, changing oil, etc.
- Communicate with Port Engineer to identify problems and expedite repairs; assist with repairs, as needed.
- Supervise passenger boarding, safety orientation/demonstration, emergency response and crowd control.
- Plan and execute emergency drills, equipment checks and safety meetings in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and AMT policy.
- Maintain all navigational equipment in good working order; keep logs and ship/company documents, as directed. Provide daily operations report to office.
Qualifications/Experience
- Experience on passenger vessels and/or experience operating vessels in Southeast Alaska required. Required minimum 50-ton license.
- Mechanical aptitude, engine room experience preferred. Diesel mechanics or electrical/electronics background helpful.
- Must have ability to build effective team and skills required to resolve crew conflicts in order to provide quality experience for customers.
- Must have ability to speak on P.A. system, and to provide commentary.
- Must be able to lift and move objects of up to 50 lbs. as required.
- Must be drug free (pre-employment screening and enrollment in random drug testing program is Coast Guard required).

Pay

Deckhand
Requires basic seamanship skills. Mechanical aptitude and some experience with diesel engines preferred. Assist Captain to monitor vessel systems and troubleshoot problems. Interact with passengers and perform customer service duties. Provide for passenger safety while underway and maintain impeccably clean vessel at all times. Must be able to work as a team member and be comfortable interacting with guests.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Check all engine/jet fluids upon arriving on vessel each morning, bring all equipment online, log all entries and report any problems to Captain.
- Assist with passenger boarding, safety orientation/demonstration, emergency response and crowd control.
- Complete routine engine room checks underway, making minor mechanical repairs and adjustments as necessary, and assisting crew members to ensure that passengers receive optimum tour quality and premium customer service.
- Assist Captain in wheelhouse with navigating and/or wildlife sighting as directed.
- Maintain vessel appearance, with regards to cleanliness and safety, in engine and jet rooms, in voids and on decks. Assist other crew with cabin, galley and heads.
- Under direction of Captain, complete all routine vessel maintenance on a daily basis. This will include, but not be limited to: cleaning, sanitation pumping, restocking and refueling.
- Assist Captain to perform required safety checks of all essential equipment on a weekly basis. Maintain current and accurate logs.
- Work with Port Engineer to complete all mandatory vessel maintenance on a monthly basis, including but not limited to oil/filter changes, zinc/belt replacement, etc.
- Identify problems, inform Port Engineer and assist in performing needed repairs.
- Perform other duties under supervision of Captain.
Qualifications/Experience
- Prefer experience on passenger carrying vessels.

Naturalist
Requires public speaking ability and experience using PA systems. Develop tour narrative and conduct natural history presentations for groups of up to 150 passengers. Assist passengers boarding & disembarking; provide safety and emergency orientation; and work as a team member to distribute snacks and always maintain impeccably clean vessel. Biology and natural history background helpful.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Develop tour narrative plan with duty captain for each voyage, factoring time constraints, weather, recent sightings, tide, season, etc.
- Direct passengers boarding and disembarking, and during an emergency. Conduct safety and emergency orientation.
- Work with Guest Services crew members to provide commentary and personal interaction/service with up to 150 passengers on tour.
- Assist Guest Services crew members in the galley as needed. Including, but not limited to, distribution of snacks and food items as well as beverages. Employees 21+ are required to obtain TAPS certification to serve alcohol.
- Vessel duties include line handing, assist with docking / undocking of the vessel and mooring with cruise ships as requested by vessel captain.
- Assist other crew in maintaining vessel appearance, cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.
- Perform other duties under supervision of Captain.
Qualifications/Experience
- Prior experience working on passenger carrying vessels preferred.
- Certifications required prior to first day of employment include CPR / FA certification, and Alaska Food Handlers card. Employees 21+ must obtain TAPS certification to serve alcohol.

Guest Service
Interact with passengers by answering questions and helping with specific requests. Operate galley and gift shop which includes food preparation, snack service, retail presentations and the sale of local retail products. Maintain impeccably clean vessel at all times. Must be able to work as a team member and be comfortable interacting with guests.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Present a professional and friendly attitude while on duty.
- Direct and assist passenger movement on and about the vessel.
- Participate in passenger safety orientation and maintain safe conditions underway.
- Help operate galley, bar and commissary, including preparation & distribution of snacks, sales, stocking, inventory order lists and related paperwork.
- Routine maintenance including, but not limited to: cleaning, sanitation, restocking consumables in cabin area and heads; making note of needed equipment repairs.
- Enhance the cruise experience for passengers, including answering questions and helping passengers with specific problems/requests.
- Other duties, as needed.

Shore Support Positions:

Administrative Coordinator
Must be computer proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Quickbooks with strong organizational skills. Answers telephones, greets public and maintains general office files. Maintains office equipment and supplies. Responds to all Independent Tour inquiries; processes advance independent ticket sales; creates daily sales reports; and distributes passenger manifest lists for boat crews. Provides clerical support to Sales and Service Manager and Operations Manager. This is a shore-based position.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Coordinate independent visitor tour sales including:~Answer office toll-free information line & respond to inquiries.~Process advance ticket sales and create periodic sales reports for submission to A/R.~Distribute passenger manifest lists for boat crews. Coordinate ticket sales for local vendor contacts.
- Tracks A/P receipts, creating periodic reports for main office in Sitka.
- Assist with documentation of new employees and creating pre-season employment training programs and support materials.
- Maintain confidential and sensitive files.
- Promptly answer all incoming calls with proper telephone etiquette; must sound professional, credible, pleasant and sincere.
- Ensure office equipment is in working order; trouble shoot equipment problems & schedule service calls for equipment, as needed. Maintain office supplies for division and process daily mail needs.
- Maintain organized general office files and office work area. Assist all staff to maintain a clean, organized office.
- Assist with special events and staff events.
- Provide clerical support to managers as needed. Assist with dockside tour dispatch as needed.

Qualifications/Experience
- Previous office or customer service experience a must; and previous experience in the visitor industry and/or a related industry preferred.
- Must have excellent Microsoft Word, Excel, & Outlook skills.
- Bookkeeping experience preferred.
- Job requires a strong multi-tasker with highly developed communication & organizational skills. Must have the ability to work independently, and in a team-oriented environment.

- Must be available to work entire season without interruption and be available to attend the 40 hour pre-season training program.

Assistant Port Engineer
Under the direction of Port Engineer, this position is responsible for performing regular scheduled maintenance duties on all day tour vessels including assisting Captains with oil changes; for assisting Port Engineer with mechanical repairs; and for keeping all parts, filters, and equipment areas on dock stocked, organized and neat.
Qualifications/Experience
- Must possess current Drivers’ license and have record with no recent violations.
- Applicant should be able to pick up at least 50 pounds in line of duties.
- Be comfortable working around diesel engines.
- Posses some experience with mechanic’s tools.
- Must be self-motivated and be able to work unsupervised.
- Must be able to work varied shifts, some weekends and some holidays.
- Must be drug free (pre-employment screening and enrollment in random drug testing program is Coast Guard required).
- Must be able to work from mid April to the end of September with little or no interruption.
Responsibilities
- Perform engine oil changes on a fleet of four tour vessels.
- Be able to work unsupervised.

Assistant Supply Coordinator
This is a seasonal full-time position. Reporting to the Supply Coordinator. This position aids the Supply coordinator in day-to-day operations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Supply Coordinator to ensure tours have needed supplies.
- Maintain clean and orderly on site and remote storage areas.
- Follow procedures to efficiently distribute products to various vessels in fleet.
- Oversee the cleaning of all vessel laundry (cloths, towels, window diapers, and rags.
- Notify Supply Coordinator of low stock items.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Fill in as guest service as needed.
- Fill in as Dock rep as needed.
Act in a professional and pleasant manner in executing responsibilities as a liaison with boat crews.
Required Skills & Education

Interpretive Guide
Conduct walking tours through the historic George Inlet Salmon Cannery, located in a picturesque, wilderness setting. Present the fascinating culture and lore of a by-gone era and uniquely Alaskan way of life, leading groups of 16-48 guests at a time. Requires public speaking ability and an enthusiastic/theatrical presentation style. Must take pride in presenting history with accuracy and authenticity. Some light maintenance of cannery grounds required. This is a shore-based position.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Meet all tour buses and Allen Marine tour vessels, escort passengers through facility and conduct narrated tour of site.
- Develop tour narrative as directed by supervisor with emphasis on cultural details of life during this former period and with respect for historic accuracy.
- Work with other guides on site to facilitate group flow and maintain tour timing as move through different buildings and different exhibits.
- Train to demonstrate machinery on the only half-pound can reform line still in existence.
- Assist other guides to maintain parking lot, grounds, bathrooms and buildings in a clean and orderly manner on a daily basis.
- Must be conscious of and provide for the safety and comfort of guests at all times.
