Glacier Bay Job Openings
Allen Marine partners with Aramark and the National Park Service to provide vessel services to explore Glacier Bay National Park. The 8-hour excursion is offered seven days a week. Tours of Glacier Bay begin Memorial Day weekend and conclude Labor Day weekend.
Dorm style housing is available for employees. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided for crew members. It is important to note that there is limited cell phone and internet service available in this remote port.
Employment begins and ends in Juneau, Alaska for onboarding and training. Allen Marine provides travel either by boat or plane, at company’s discretion, from Juneau to Gustavus. Travel is also provided from Gustavus to Juneau at the conclusion of employee’s contracted season.
*Lodge housing is located in Gustavus, Alaska. Gustavus is a small community in Southeast Alaska. The population of Gustavus as of 2020 is approximately 655 residents.
For All Positions:
- Preference is given to applicants who are fully available to work from late April through the end of September.
- Must be drug-free. Allen Marine participates in a Coast Guard required pre-employment & random drug screening program for all employees.
- Must be at least 18 years old at date of hire, and able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work varied hours, including weekends and holidays.

Glacier Bay Captain / Manager
Under the supervision of the Operations Manager and Port Captain of the Juneau Division. This position is overall in charge of the successful operations of our Glacier Bay excursions. Prior experience in the marine tourism industry and particularly on passenger vessels is desirable. Preference is given to applicants with knowledge of diesel mechanics, waterjet propulsion, and electrical systems. Must be able to build team and maintain crew moral to provide a quality experience for our guests. The position requires the ability to work independently. Duties and Responsibilities listed here are subject to addition or removal depending on requirements of the company. The duties and responsibilities listed are in addition to the requirements of the Captain Position.
Leadership and Management Responsibilities:
- Ensure that vessel crew are acting within the guidelines of the Company Mission
Act as an example and give guidance for the execution of the Company Mission and True Alaskan Hospitality - Conduct tours as directed according to descriptions in sales literature and procedures in policy manual. Supervise all aspects of tour delivery and tour quality.
- Manage, schedule, and direct crew members in the execution of all their job responsibilities; build a productive and efficient team; maintain high morale over course of season.
- Ensure adequate crew rotation and scheduling throughout the season and communicate with Juneau Port Captain of any crew issues or additional requirements
- Liaison between vessel crews and management regarding personnel issues
- Acting Liaison with Aramark Lodge and Glacier Bay Park Rangers
- Ensure Vessel is up to the terms of the Park contract
- Manage any personnel issues that are off hours
- Operate vessel in accordance with Park guidelines
- Relay vessel mechanical issues to Port Engineer and Port Captain in Juneau
- Schedule and perform routine maintenance on vessel
- Oversee all aspects of vessel readiness for tours:
- Adequate food delivered from Lodge
- Load and Offload plan for expected kayaks
- Boarding ramps set for passengers
- Maintain all navigational equipment in good working order; keep logs and ship/company documents, as directed. Provide daily operations report to office.
- Represent Allen Marine Tours within the community of Gustavus, maintaining and building upon strong partnerships.
- Maintain all Allen Marine Tours property in Gustavus including, but not limited to vessels, and Crew house.
- Consult with Park Rangers regarding additional Park regulations regarding wildlife viewing guidelines.
- TAPS Certification Required
Qualifications/Experience
- Experience on passenger vessels and/or experience operating vessels in Southeast Alaska required. Required minimum 100-ton license
- Must have or obtain FCC Radio Operator’s Permit
- Mechanical aptitude, engine room experience preferred. Diesel mechanics or electrical/electronics background helpful.
- Must have ability to build effective team and skills required to resolve crew conflicts to provide quality experience for customers.
- Must have ability to speak on P.A. system, and to provide commentary.
- Must be able to lift and move objects of up to 50 lbs. as required.
- Must be drug free (pre-employment screening and enrollment in random drug testing program is Coast Guard required).
- Must be able to work varied shift hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Must be clean, well groomed, courteous, honest, and most important, reliable.
- Uniform shirts & jacket provided.
Pay
DOE. Limited Benefits. This is a seasonal full-time position from mid-April to October. Preference will be given to candidates who are available to work the entire season without interruption. An end of season bonus will be paid to employees who complete their contract in good standing.
Glacier Bay Crewmember
Requires basic seamanship skills. Mechanical aptitude and some experience with diesel engines preferred. Assist Captain to monitor vessel systems and troubleshoot problems. Interact with passengers and perform customer service duties. Always provide for passenger safety while underway and maintain impeccably clean vessel. Must be able to work as a team member and be comfortable interacting with guests.
Duties/Responsibilities- Check all engine/jet fluids upon arriving on vessel each morning, bring all equipment online, log all entries and report any problems to Captain.
- Assist with passenger boarding, safety orientation/demonstration, and crowd control.
- Be familiar with all safety equipment and operation on board the vessel.
- Complete routine engine room checks underway, making minor mechanical repairs and adjustments as necessary, and assisting crew members to ensure that passengers receive optimum tour quality and premium customer service.
- Assist Captain in wheelhouse with navigating and/or wildlife sighting as directed.
- Maintain vessel appearance, with regards to cleanliness and safety, in engine and jet rooms, in voids and on decks. Assist other crew with cabin, galley, and bathrooms.
- Help operate galley, bar, and commissary, including preparation & distribution of meals, sales, stocking, inventory order lists and related paperwork.
- Under direction of Captain, complete all routine vessel maintenance on a daily basis. This will include, but not be limited to: cleaning, sanitation pumping, restocking, and refueling.
- Assist Captain to perform required safety checks of all essential equipment on a weekly basis.
- Maintain current and accurate logs.
- Work with Captain to complete all mandatory vessel maintenance on a monthly basis, including but not limited to oil/filter changes, zinc/belt replacement, etc.
- Identify problems, inform the Captain, and assist in performing needed repairs.
- Perform other duties under supervision of Captain.
- Prefer experience on passenger carrying vessels.
- Mechanical aptitude, engine room experience preferred. Diesel mechanics or electrical/electronics background helpful.
- Must be able to work as a team with other crew to provide quality experience for customers, including answering questions and providing commentary.
- Must be able to lift and move objects of up to 50 lbs. as required.
- Must be drug free (pre-employment screening and enrollment in random drug testing program is Coast Guard required).
- Must be able to work varied shift hours, including weekends and holidays. Days off will be scheduled but must be willing to be flexible in meeting tour demand.
- Must be clean, well groomed, courteous, honest, and most important, reliable.
- Uniform jackets and hats are provided.
- TAP and Alaska Food Worker Certifications required.
